Artist Statement

Jack O'Connor is an Interdisciplinary Artist, whose focus is on Printmaking And Figurative Oil Painting,

 

His Work is deeply rooted in place and identity. Focusing on Irish folklore , bringing it into a more modern context  while retaining the traditon of these deeply traditonal form of Storytelling . his work is used  as  statement that  Folklore is not a dead ancient artefact to be examined but rather  an alive and vibrant practice, They are the very building blocks of Irish Society. In these grand discussions around what it means to be Irish,we are being shown only buzzwords, what ireland and being irish from a  cultural point of view is completely ignored. Jacks work explores this very idea , this idea that there is a  "new form" of being irish is ridiclous as our contemporary lives are not as divergent from the past as we may think

His current work surrounds the Tain and  exploring the way the language used within the text was distorted in the most widespread translations were adjusted to keep this idea of Ireland and Irish people the same .through a more contemporary reading, one of land, the body and identity.
